Dog Days: The Things Dogs Do For Fun

Serah and Jesse at work

Dog Days. What a peaceful sounding phrase. It conjures up images of laying in the hammock under a big tree and avoiding the hot August sun. The sounds of birds chirping around or maybe a distant lawnmower from someone who's over ambitious.

Ahhh.....but this isn't about the Dog Days of August. This is about those four legged little people in fur coats that we so dearly love having live with us. They come in a variety of colors and size and models. And just like big people they have definite differences of opinions and attitudes. And priorities. And viewpoints on their world.

Jesse with the coffee cup
Like the time I was trying to do some work outside. I had just gotten Jessie not long earlier from a breeder in Montana. You might say she's a Montana girl. And she loves to run from tree to tree, sitting there with her little tail wagging 90 mph and a big smile on her snout as she looks up at birds. She's a bird dog. A Brittany to be exact. Jesse (named after John Denver's song 'Whispering Jesse') is my 3rd Brittany. The first two were Becky (another Montana girl) and Daisy (from Eastern Washington). They've now both moved back home to the happy hunting ground.

But Jesse, she definitely has a mind of her own. As I was saying, I was outside changing blades on my lawnmower when I looked up and saw Jesse walking with my coffee cup in her mouth. It was a Kodak moment for me. And cute. But that day I went to pick up a tool and noticed it was gone. She had taken that too! Boy, don't give that girl a credit card. Then there was the day I came home and found one of my new phones missing. So I went hunting for that. Out in the yard it was found. Damaged beyond repair. Grrr........

Serah as a puppy

So I went looking for a friend for her. I had a lead from Jesse's breeder to see someone in Ione, Washington. So I went up to check out her puppies and chose one that I wanted when she was old enough to come home. I can still remember that day. As I walked up to the puppies the one I had chosen came running to me. It was as if Serah (named after Daniel Boone's mom) was saying "ok dad, I'm ready to come home with you!" So, now for the tales...........and your stories.

One day I had been gone for a while and came home to a little surprise. I had just gotten a couple of new phone books. And there they were..........shredded all over the floor! Actually, I found this quite amusing. They'd been busy little buggers. I'm not quite sure what they got out of tearing pieces of paper up, but I'm sure they had fun doing it.

And then there was the time I came home from work and the girls had left me with another little surprise. While I was hard at work on my job, they had been doing, well, you know, the thing those little people in fur coats do best. And I was quite shocked, to say the least. There were the couch cushions, all three, on the floor. But one was in a state of total disrepair. That was a fun mess to clean up. And dad wasn't a happy camper that day.

There goes the couch
Boy can they be full of surprises, eh? But I wouldn't trade them for the world. Normally, when I mow the lawn, they'll walk along side of me. Yeh, seems boring, but they're brits, and they like staying close to me. Even when mowing the front lawn they'll walk back and forth to some degree with me. But they still like to wander over to either neighbors' yard to check things out. Jesse really likes looking for birds.

And now there goes the pillow

A couple of years ago I flew down to Mexico for a week. It was an ok trip. Thanks for asking. But the girls apparently felt they were on vacation also. There was another mess to clean up. This time it was one of my pillows on the bed.

ye old hand lotion t

One day I came home and Serah, bless her heart, had found my bottle of hand lotion. I'm not sure how she did it, but I have to laugh trying to picture her carrying that bottle through the house leaving a trail of lotion on the carpet as she went. Jesse had a fascination with my wood stick matches by the wood stove. A couple of times I found them out in the yard.

Then there was the time I ordered some special coffee. The UPS driver left it at the back door, but inside the fence. Well, that package probably smell pretty tempting, because when I got home they had chewed through the cardboard box, through the coffee's box, and then proceeded to chew up a bunch of the individual packets. I had several pictures but could only find one.

Adios

I don't exactly know what to do with this space. Maybe wish others farewell. Maybe to put a famous quote. I'll have to think on this some more after a rum and coke.
